Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Title of Site:

Zaption

URL:

Description of Site:

Zaption allows you to upload video from very popular sources like YouTube with ease. Once you upload the video to Zaption you can then edit the clip or full length video with text, multiple choice, essay, or drawing activities. Whenever you add an activity, the video automatically pauses for the student to complete the task. Essentially it is an interactive worksheet for a video. If students didn't catch the information they can re-watch the segment. Student enter by clicking on a saved link and enter their names. The information they enter is recorded and the teacher has the ability to go back to view answers and look at additional analytic data, like scores for multiple choice questions. You can sign on with your Google Account. There is a free account and a paid account with additional features. This would be appropriate for any age that have basic typing and computer skills, middle elementary through higher education. This is an education specific web resource.

Educational Uses of Site

I have found that videos are necessary to build mental imagery. Studying history, many students cannot visualize time periods without seeing an example. There are many great video clips available. Zaption allows the teacher to highlight and emphasize key ideas that students may miss. In a traditional view. Students may miss information because the video continues to run while they are trying to answer a previous question.

Review of Site

I have only used this resource a few times but give it very high reviews. It was very easy to use and allows students to have interaction with the video, pause/replay, and checks for understanding. This is a great tool to use for homework or in class. Students work at their own pace. I would not use this resource more than a few (2-3) times a month as there is little peer to peer interaction, at least on the free version. Students like the resource and I have found students are more focused than if we watch a standard video. Each student needs access to a computer to use this resource.
